Children’s Privacy

Lucratas is used by young writers, including children under 13. This section explains how we handle information from children and the choices parents and guardians have. It is written to meet the requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

How children’s accounts are created

Children cannot create their own accounts. You must be 18 or older to register, and an account for anyone under 18 can only be created by a parent or guardian from their own Lucratas account. By creating a child’s account, the parent or guardian consents to us collecting, using, and storing the child’s information as described in this Privacy Policy. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 13 without a parent’s or guardian’s consent, we will delete it.

Information we collect from children

  • Account details provided by the parent or guardian: full name, username, date of birth, email address, and password

  • Writing the child creates, such as stories, drafts, characters, and other story material

  • Images the child uploads, such as a profile picture or cover art

  • The writing groups the child belongs to, and the friends and people the child follows on Lucratas

  • Usage Data and the session and security cookies described above, which are needed to keep the child signed in and the Service secure

We only collect the information a child needs to take part in the Service. We do not require a child to share more information than is necessary to use a feature.

How we use children’s information

We use children’s information only to provide and support the Service: to run the child’s account, let them write and share their work, take part in writing groups, keep the Service secure, and contact the parent or guardian about the account. We do not show advertising to children, we do not use children’s information for advertising or marketing, and we do not sell children’s information.

What others can see

A child’s name, username, and profile picture can be seen by other Lucratas members, such as the members and storyteller of the child’s writing groups. Writing the child chooses to publish can be seen by the audience they select, which may be their friends, their groups, or everyone on Lucratas. Writing the child does not publish stays private to their account.

Who we share children’s information with

We share children’s information only with the Service Providers that help us run Lucratas, and only so they can do that work for us: Amazon Web Services to send account emails, DigitalOcean to host the Service and store uploaded files, and Stripe to process payments, which are made by the parent or guardian. We may also disclose information when required by law, as described under Disclosure of Data.

Parents’ and guardians’ rights

A parent or guardian can, at any time:

  • Review the information in their child’s account from the Children section of their account settings, or ask us for a copy of it

  • Ask us to correct or delete their child’s information

  • Withdraw their consent and ask us to stop collecting or using their child’s information

Removing a child from your account does not delete the child’s information. To have it deleted, contact us using the details below. We will verify that you are the child’s parent or guardian before acting on a request. If consent is withdrawn or the information is deleted, the child will no longer be able to use their account.

How long we keep children’s information

We keep a child’s information for as long as their account is in use, or until a parent or guardian asks us to delete it. Accounts whose email address is never verified are deleted automatically after 7 days.

Changes affecting children

If we make a material change to how we collect, use, or share children’s information, we will notify parents and guardians and ask for their consent again where the law requires it.
